About Kleffner Ranch
Kleffner Ranch is the former W.C. Child Ranch south of East Helena. Child, one of the first ranchers to raise purebred Herefords in Montana Territory, bought the land about 1885 and after the killing winter of 1886-87 built a 27,000-square-foot stone barn 55 feet high, sized for 500 cattle and 350 tons of hay, and in 1888 an octagonal house with a second-floor ballroom. Child went bankrupt in 1893; Paul Kleffner leased and then bought the ranch in 1946, and his family held it until 2005, when Denis and Stacy Young bought it. The ranch was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 23, 1977.
The ranch is at 305 Highway 518, East Helena, MT 59635, a short drive south of East Helena on the road toward Montana City, with on-site parking on the grounds. It operates as an event venue rather than a public park: The Barn and The Grove each hold up to 500 guests, The Banquet Hall holds 150, and The Coop Collective is a smaller space. There are no regular public hours. Public events, such as fall fests, craft fairs, and holiday markets, are ticketed or free per event and are announced on the ranch's site, its Facebook page, and 406tix under The Kleffner.
