About Mt Ascension Brewing Co.
Mt Ascension Brewing Co. opened in August 2022 in the remodeled former Helena Independent Record building at 317 Cruse Ave., a building since rebranded as The Independent. It brews its own beer on site using mostly Montana-grown hops and malt and runs a full kitchen, and in 2026 it markets itself as Mt Ascension Gastropub. The rooftop terrace looks across downtown toward Mount Helena and Mount Ascension, the peak the brewery is named for. The building includes a rentable venue and catering space, and the taproom hosts trivia, live music, pop-up markets, and beer pairing dinners.
The brewery is on Cruse Avenue at the south edge of downtown, a few blocks uphill from the Last Chance Gulch walking mall and below the Mount Helena trailheads. Cruse Avenue has street parking, and the block has more room to park than the mall does. Posted taproom hours are noon to 8 p.m. every day, which lines up with Montana's 8 p.m. cutoff for on-site brewery pours. Food can be ordered at the bar or through DoorDash.
