About Mount Helena City Park
Mount Helena City Park is a 620-acre city park built around Mount Helena, which reaches 5,468 feet in elevation, roughly 1,300 feet above the city below. The park has about six interconnected trails, including the 1906 Trail (the original, most direct route to the summit) and the Mount Helena Ridge Trail, which continues into the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. Trail-side features include Devil's Kitchen, a large cave, and a big painted "H" on the mountainside above downtown.
The main trailhead is at the end of Reeders Village Drive on the mountain's eastern shoulder, with a paved lot, restrooms, handicapped parking and picnic tables. A second trailhead with an accessible gravel path (the Mount Helena Accessible Trail) starts from the Adams Street parking lot. The park is free and open daily; dogs are required to be on leash within 100 yards of trailheads and parking lots and may be off-leash under voice control beyond that. The 1906 Trail is a moderately difficult round trip taking roughly two hours.
