About State Capital Band Concerts in the Park
The State Capital Band is a volunteer community band, 88 musicians in 2026 under conductor Robert Loveridge, that gives free concerts at the Memorial Park band shell on North Last Chance Gulch. It describes itself as one of the longest continually performing bands in the country, and its 2025 series was its 123rd season. The band rehearses one night a week and performs for six weeks over the summer. Programs mix marches, classical wind ensemble pieces, Broadway and movie themes, and ballads. At the final concert of the 2025 season the band played pieces the audience had chosen as favorites.
Concerts run Thursdays from 8 to 9 p.m. In 2025 they were June 26, July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; in 2019 the season ran June 27 through August 1. Admission is free, and people bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the lawn in front of the band shell. Ron Sager, who joined the band in 1969, emcees and closes each concert by singing "Montana."
