About Vigilante Parade
The Vigilante Parade started in 1924, when Helena High Principal Albert J. Roberts proposed it to replace a violent student tradition called the junior-senior flag fight, in which each class tried to tear down the other class's flag and students were documented with black eyes, bloody noses and broken teeth. The parade instead had students build floats depicting Helena's mining and vigilante-justice history. It has run every year since except during World War II (1942-1945) and 2020, when COVID-19 replaced it with a drive-through 'Vigilante Cruise'; the traditional parade format returned in 2022 and reached its 102nd year in 2026.
Helena High School students organize and build the floats, with Capital High School students also taking part. The parade runs down Last Chance Gulch through downtown Helena starting at noon, on the first Friday in May. It is free to watch, and downtown businesses along the route commonly adjust hours around the crowd. Past dignitaries who attended include Norwegian Crown Prince Olav V in 1939 and President Harry Truman, who judged floats in 1950.

Tips
- Downtown sidewalks along Last Chance Gulch fill up before noon; arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for a curb spot.
- Street parking downtown is limited during the parade; the Nob Hill or Great Northern parking garages are a short walk to the route.
- The parade runs midday on a Friday, so expect downtown Helena traffic and school buses in the area that morning.
